Generalmente suele creerse que la cuchara de bar no es una herramienta indispensable para la coctelería, sin embargo esto no es así. Las cucharas de bar están especialmente diseñadas con finalidades en particular, medir y revolver varios ingredientes en los tragos.
En numerosas preparaciones las recetas dicen que son necesarias una, dos o tres cucharadas de determinado ingrediente y siempre se están refiriendo a este, no a las cucharas comunes y corrientes de la cocina. Por otra parte, son las indicadas para revolver los cócteles y para ello tienen ese mango tan largo y delgado.
